The FDA and CDC are investigating a multistate outbreak of STEC and Salmonella Agona linked to alfalfa sprouts. As of August 24, 2026, a total of 55 infections had been reported across 15 states. Of these, 46 involved E. coli, 7 involved Salmonella, and 2 people were infected with both pathogens. Four people had been hospitalized, and no deaths had been reported.
The key point is that the 15 states where illnesses occurred are not the same as the states where product distribution has currently been confirmed.
Which Products Were Recalled?
On August 22, 2026, Everything Sprouts, LLC recalled certain alfalfa sprout products under the Calco and Everything Sprouts brands. The recalled alfalfa sprouts were packaged in 5-ounce plastic containers. The lot numbers to check are 222, 223, 225, 226, and 230.
Some mixed products containing alfalfa sprouts are also included.

According to the FDA, the recalled products were distributed from May 27 through August 21, 2026, to wholesalers and grocery stores in Minnesota and Wisconsin, and were supplied to restaurants in both states. The FDA continues to determine whether the products were distributed in additional states.
What the Outbreak Investigation Has Found
Investigators interviewed 34 people, and 26 of them—76%—said they had eaten alfalfa sprouts before becoming ill. Based on epidemiological and traceback information, the FDA identified alfalfa sprouts distributed by Everything Sprouts as the source of the outbreak and began an on-site inspection and sample collection at the company on August 19.
However, the cause of contamination and whether additional products or other companies are linked to the illnesses remain under investigation. Facility and sanitation issues mentioned in an FDA warning letter from 2025 do not establish a confirmed cause of contamination for the 2026 outbreak.
What Consumers Should Check
The CDC advises consumers to:
- Do not eat, sell, or serve recalled alfalfa sprouts.
- Clean items and surfaces that came into contact with the food.
- Contact a healthcare provider immediately if you have diarrhea with bloody stool, a fever above 102°F, diarrhea that does not improve after more than 2 days, vomiting severe enough to prevent you from keeping fluids down, or signs of dehydration.
