A large flash flood struck the Bhotekoshi River in Nepal’s Rasuwa District on the morning of August 26, 2026. The flood caused extensive damage across Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, and Gorkha, sweeping away homes, roads, and bridges along the river.
Key Change
The event was initially recorded as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake, but after further analysis, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) determined that it was not an earthquake. Instead, seismic energy was generated by a sudden slope failure involving a glacier and a debris flow. The agency said the energy was equivalent to a magnitude 5.2 event.
Accordingly, the safest current description is a slope failure involving a glacier followed by flash flooding, rather than an unequivocal “pure glacier collapse” or “glacial lake outburst flood.” Glacier collapse and glacial lake outburst flooding are not the same process.
USGS’s initial analysis reclassified the event from an earthquake to a glacier-involved slope failure and debris flow.
Current Status
According to figures from Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported by the Associated Press on September 2, at least 1,118 people had died and more than 3,900 remained missing. A total of 324 foreign nationals had been rescued, while 590 people from 39 countries remained missing. Missing people cannot be added to the death toll, and the figures may change as search operations and identification efforts continue.
Nepal’s Ministry of Home Affairs began search and rescue operations and emergency relief immediately after the flooding, and said that a full assessment of the human and material damage was still underway.
Impact
Reports said that the glacial collapse sent rock, ice, and glacial meltwater into the valley, rapidly raising water levels downstream. Homes, roads, and bridges in downstream areas were damaged in the process.
The warning system has also become a point of concern. According to the Kathmandu Post, the collapse occurred at 8:37 a.m., while Nepalese authorities issued a downstream text alert 38 minutes later, at 9:15 a.m. However, it cannot be concluded that the alert delay directly caused any particular death.
Nepal has identified and monitored 21 major glacial lakes as potential hazards. In March 2026, ICIMOD warned that glaciers in the Hindu Kush Himalaya were melting at twice the rate seen since 2000. However, a causal link showing that climate change directly caused this specific collapse had not been established at the time of reporting.
