Hanwha held the “Space, with us” space conference on August 29, 2026, in Mapo-gu, Seoul. The event explored the future of the space industry, the growth potential of a private-sector-led space economy, and the direction in which South Korea’s private space industry should develop.
The issue has drawn attention in the context of Hanwha’s mid- to long-term investment plan announced on July 3, 2026. Hanwha Group said it would invest a total of 55 trillion won in the aerospace and artificial intelligence industries through 2040.
Areas Included in the 55 Trillion Won Investment Plan
The publicly announced plan outlines an effort to expand space and AI infrastructure together.
- Independent space launch vehicles
- Very-low-Earth-orbit SAR satellites
- Space AI data centers
- Low-Earth-orbit satellite communications networks
- Defense AI data centers
Hanwha’s official materials describe Space Hub as an integrated space business platform that connects launch vehicle, satellite, Earth observation, and analytics capabilities. Accordingly, the vision can be understood as a structure linking not only individual launch vehicle or satellite businesses but also space data and AI applications.
The key point is not the 55 trillion won figure itself, but the direction of bringing launch vehicles, satellites, data, and AI together into a single value chain.
Is “Korean SpaceX” a Specific Company?
In currently available public materials, “Korean SpaceX” does not refer to the official launch or designation of a single specific company. The expression is used in the context of discussions about the need for an integrated company—a so-called mega-player—that connects launch vehicles, satellites, and data services within South Korea’s space industry.
In other words, it cannot be interpreted to mean that Hanwha has become equal to SpaceX in technological capability or market position. The expression is closer to a metaphor linking the perceived need for a private-sector-led, integrated space industry ecosystem with Hanwha’s Space Hub vision.
What to Watch Going Forward
The 55 trillion won figure is a long-term investment plan announced by the company. Based on publicly available materials alone, it is not possible to confirm the final contracts for each business, annual disbursement amounts, or whether the entire investment will ultimately be executed. Future developments should therefore be monitored to see whether actual contracts and spending are detailed in line with the plan.
The conference and the 55 trillion won investment announcement should not be mistaken for new announcements made at the same time. The conference was held on August 29, while the 55 trillion won plan was announced on July 3.
