LG Uplus is expanding its previously Korea-focused membership benefits to overseas travel destinations. The company said it had completed its membership in the Wonderjoy Travel Alliance and plans to launch a global membership service this year that provides benefits through partnerships with local telecommunications companies.
Usage Results Confirmed During the Japan Pilot
LG Uplus operated a global membership pilot service in Japan from June through the end of August 2026. The benefits included discounts at Don Quijote and Lawson, Go Taxi discounts, benefits for a one-day Mount Fuji tour, and discount coupons for NEWoMan shopping malls.
During the three-month Japan pilot, coupon downloads surpassed 10,000. Nine out of 10 customers who downloaded coupons actually used the Don Quijote and Lawson discounts.
The most frequently used benefits during the pilot were discounts at Japan’s leading shopping and convenience-store chains.
Customers in their 40s accounted for the largest age group at 34.8%, followed by those in their 30s at 24.8%, 50s at 18.6%, and 20s at 15.7%. These figures describe the composition of pilot-service users and do not represent the overseas usage patterns of all LG Uplus customers.
What Is the Wonderjoy Travel Alliance?
The Wonderjoy Travel Alliance is a partnership that shares membership benefits among telecommunications companies in the Asia-Pacific region. Participating carriers include Singtel in Singapore, KDDI in Japan, HKT in Hong Kong, AIS in Thailand, Taiwan Mobile in Taiwan, Globe in the Philippines, Telkomsel in Indonesia, and Optus in Australia. The structure allows only one telecommunications company from each country to join.
LG Uplus envisions its global membership as a service providing shopping, tourism, and transportation benefits linked to local telecommunications companies in major overseas travel destinations. However, because the company has only announced plans for a launch this year, the country-specific partners and discount rates for the official service have not yet been finalized.
From Text-Message Coupons to an App-Based Service
During the pilot, coupons were delivered through multimedia messaging service (MMS) text messages. LG Uplus said it found that customers had difficulty finding the coupons they had received and would pursue app-based delivery for the official service.
The Japan pilot currently confirmed was conducted among applicants who had subscribed to the Roaming Pass. Therefore, the conditions of this pilot should not be interpreted as terms that all customers can immediately use. Additional guidance is needed on the official service’s eligible users, whether a roaming subscription will be required, and the detailed usage process.
