Brighton 4-0 Aston Villa: The Key Was the “31st Minute”

Brighton thrashed Aston Villa 4-0 in the opening match of the 2026-27 Premier League season. The game was played at Brighton’s Amex Stadium at 2 p.m. UK time on August 23, 2026.

The match turned sharply in the early stages. According to the scoring records compiled by BBC and Sky Sports, all four of Brighton’s goals came within the first 31 minutes.

The direction of the opening match was effectively decided within the first 31 minutes.

De Cuyper and Hinshelwood Drive Brighton’s Early Onslaught

Brighton’s official match report said Maxim De Cuyper and Jack Hinshelwood were each involved in two goals within the first 32 minutes. The Guardian also reported that De Cuyper scored once and was involved in creating Lindelöf’s own goal, while Hinshelwood scored twice.

In particular, Hinshelwood’s goals in the 30th and 31st minutes completely fixed the flow of the match in Brighton’s favor. Brighton held on for a 4-0 victory without adding another goal in the second half.

João Gomes’ Red Card Added to Aston Villa’s Problems

After conceding four goals by the 31st minute, Aston Villa also saw João Gomes sent off in the 40th minute. BBC, Sky Sports, and The Guardian all confirmed Gomes’ dismissal.

Sky Sports reported that the sending-off came after a VAR review and was caused by a challenge in which Gomes stretched out his foot toward Georginio Rutter. A Reuters Connect photo caption also recorded the VAR monitor review inside the stadium and the moment before Gomes’ red card.

However, it would be difficult to conclude that Gomes’ dismissal was the sole reason for the defeat. All four goals had already been scored within the first 31 minutes, before the sending-off.

Why the Result Drew Extra Attention

The match carried more context than a simple heavy defeat. The Premier League’s official fixture announcement and Aston Villa’s official website both confirmed that it was the first league game of the 2026-27 season. Because Aston Villa conceded four goals within the first 31 minutes of the new season, the collapse in their opener drew greater attention.

The Guardian reported that Aston Villa entered the match without several attackers, including Ollie Watkins, Brian Maatsen, and Tammy Abraham. However, details such as the reasons for their absences or possible transfers cannot be stated conclusively beyond what was confirmed.

According to Brighton’s official match report, the attendance was 31,746. In the second half, a goal by Charalampos Kostoulas was ruled out for offside, while Costinha also hit the post.
