However, it would be difficult to conclude that Gomes’ dismissal was the sole reason for the defeat. All four goals had already been scored within the first 31 minutes, before the sending-off.

The Premier League’s official fixture announcement and Aston Villa’s official website both confirmed that it was the first league game of the 2026-27 season. Because Aston Villa conceded four goals within the first 31 minutes of the new season, the collapse in their opener drew greater attention.

The Guardian reported that Aston Villa entered the match without several attackers, including Ollie Watkins, Brian Maatsen, and Tammy Abraham. However, details such as the reasons for their absences or possible transfers cannot be stated conclusively beyond what was confirmed.
